Radio-controlled Clocks
"How they work"
Radio
controlled clocks do exactly what clocks are meant
to do: Indicate absolutely precise time. All the
time. Through the most remarkable technology
breakthrough in 30 years, radio-controlled clocks
are linked to the most accurate clock in the world,
the U.S. Atomic Clock.
The
U.S. Atomic Clock, which is managed by the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) - Time
and Frequency Division, is America's "paragon of
precision". This clock measures each second of time
as 9,192,631,770 vibrations of a cesium-133 atom in
a vacuum. This makes the U.S. Atomic Clock accurate
to within one second every million years. This
Clock sends out a signal at 1:00 am. This signal is
received by the radio-controlled clock which resets
itself to the exact microsecond. In fact, it sets to
the exact time within 20 nanoseconds! They will
adjust for time zones, leap year, and can be reset
in a moment by pressing a single button.
